The End, Now What?  Why choose House of Honor Books

House of Honor Books was created with the promise to value principle above profit. That’s not a very effective way to run a company, at least not in any modern sense of entrepreneurship. But then, both of the founders were idealists lost in classical romantism.

One thought himself a sort of reincarnation of Don Quixote. The other was an adherent of the Norse god Tyr. This is reflected in our logo, a combination of St. Andrews cross and a triple Tiwaz. Devotion to duty, honor, truth, and the work ethic of a vanishing generation were the foundations stones. Personnel have changed. Our principles have not.

House of Honor Books was designed on a traditional publishing model. Planning on a small scale, we knew we could operate without many of the obstacles publishing on a grand scale present. We knew what it was like to write in moments stolen from work and family. For that reason, we don’t have deadlines. We always have more books than we can work on at once. However, once editing starts, books progress largely on the author’s schedule.

Authors may be driven by factors other than money, that does not mean money is unimportant. Sales represent people who are paying money to read your work. Publishing a book is a business proposition, and ideally a profitable one. Authors pour irreplaceable chunks of their life into a book. We don’t believe they ought to pay editors, designers, and printers up front in order to get their book in print. That said publishing with us is not free. We and the authors share royalties. So, we are invested in sales of our authors’ books. We don’t make money unless you make money.

We do have written contracts, but we have yet to hold an unhappy author to the terms they accepted. Part of the reason is that we aim to build a community of authors. We offer authors a community blog and encourage them to submit their thoughts on writing and publishing. We have a community chat and a private community Facebook group. The result is that our authors drive hundreds of miles to join forces at events.

House of Honor authors know they can pick up the phone and talk directly to the publishers. Talking may be old school, but it beats an idiotic limited list of questions for discussion. What to do your finished manuscript may be something you would like to discuss. Wouldn’t you like to speak directly with a person?
